Job Title:

Summer Student Markham Cycles Youth Worker Assistant 

 

Tasks and Responsibilities: 

The Youth Worker will primarily be supporting the Markham Cycles Project. They will contribute to Markham Cycles mission of increasing access to bicycles in Markham by doing simple repairs on the bicycles of program participants, as well more extensive refurbishments of donated bicycles that will then be given away to people in need of a bike. They will contribute to Markham Cycles workshop series on various repair topics and teach basic bike repair skills to Markham Cycles volunteer mechanics. They will also assist with or lead small group rides for newcomer youth in the community. Familiarity with basic bike repair is required and additional, on-the-job mechanic skills training will be provided.

 

  • Closely follow all health guidelines and protocols with regards to mask-wearing, sanitizing hands and equipment, respecting capacity limits of workspaces, maintaining distance from others, and staying home if feeling unwell
  • Create a welcoming atmosphere for all program participants and volunteers, with the goal of creating a space where everyone can feel comfortable asking questions and learning new skills;
  • Greet and direct participants and volunteers at the bike repair booth, at times taking responsibility for registration and maintaining a flow of people and bicycles that respects health protocols
  • Working with a team of volunteers and other Youth Workers managing the project, perform simple repairs and maintenance on bicycles of program participants, such as pumping tires, greasing chains, adjusting brakes, gears and seat height
  • Under the supervision of the Youth Workers and with a team of volunteers, refurbish donated bicycles and return them to working condition
  • Assist the Youth Workers in planning and delivering a series of workshops, likely virtual, on bike repair and maintenance topics
  • Under the supervision of the Youth Workers, assist with and/or lead a series of small group rides with newcomer youth in Markham.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Manager

 

Required Qualifications

 

·        Strong interpersonal skills and experience engaging adults and youth

·       Passionate about promoting cycling in the suburbs and strong interest in bicycle repair

·       Comfortable working both independently with minimal supervision and in a team environment

·       Strict attention to detail as it relates to health and safety protocols

·       Ability to work in a culturally competent manner with diverse population and within a diverse work environment •

·       Ability and flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required

·       Experience with tools and basic bike repair

·       Secondary language skills are considered an asset

Terms and Conditions:

  • Salary: $17.20 per hour
  • Hours of work: 35 hours per week
  • Number of weeks: 8
  • Anticipated start date / End Date: July 07 to August 29, 2025
