2018-03 International Women's Day Celebration

On Saturday March 3rd, the Centre for Immigrant and Community Services held a celebration for International Women's Day at their Markham South Welcome Centre location (7220 Kennedy Road, Unit 8, Markham). The theme of the celebration was "Skills and Strength for today & Hopes and Dreams for Tomorrow".

In keeping with the theme, much of the activities during the day were focused on helping newcomer women find employment.  Dr. Susan Chuang from the University of Guelph spoke on confidence building and learning the skills of assertiveness in the workplace.  Professional make-up artists volunteered their time to show participants how to do a "do it yourself makeover" and photographers shot professional head shots for the participants, to be used as their LinkedIn profile picture.  There was a workshop showing the women how to set up their LinkedIn account as well.  Those interested in becoming a volunteer learned about various volunteer opportunities within the Centre for Immigrant and Community Services.

Other activities include information booth from York Region Public Health, Markham Small Business Centre, Social Enterprise for Canada, Markham Public Library and the Women Support Network.  There were also family fun activities such as Henna tattoo, animal balloons and face painting.
