CICS Food Bank

 

 

The CICS Food Bank was initially established as a pop-up location in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, we utilized our gymnasium to sort and assemble food hampers, while refrigeration options were limited. Deliveries occurred in the mornings with one group of volunteers, and hampers were assembled at the time of distribution by a separate group. Throughout the early days, we had to adjust our delivery service numerous times, addressing challenges such as heat, long wait times, and language barriers.

Today, we operate our food bank in a hybrid model, offering clients a selection of dry goods, meat, dairy products, and bread, allowing them to customize their food choices based on dietary needs and cultural preferences.

 

After over four years of operation, our food bank has become a vital community resource, responding to a steadily increasing demand each month. We have since relocated the food bank to a larger area within our warehouse, now equipped with fridges and dedicated food storage spaces.

We receive food donations from Daily Bread, Second Harvest, various food drives, and generous community members. Since March 2022, the number of individuals accessing our services has grown significantly and remains stable. Currently, we serve approximately 220 households each week, with food often running out by the end of the week.

Schedule:

Friday 1:30pm-4:00pm (drop-in, no appointment required)

Holiday schedule:

Closed: Friday April 18 (Good Friday)

Registration:

  1. New clients need to register at dailybread.link2feed.ca and bring the Client ID Number that they receive at the end of the online registration.
  2. On-site registrations support will no longer be available. Please complete your registration online prior to your visit and make sure to note your client numbers.
  3. People with no internet or are uncomfortable with the online form can call/text 416-688-0792 / 647-472-0385 and assistance will be provided for them.
  4. ID is not required for primary client during the registration process but requires for all registered household members under the primary client’ profile.

What to expect:

  1. Enter through the glass door next to the garden by the parking lot.
  2. If you are new to CICS Food Bank and DO NOT have a Client ID, register online at dailybread.link2feed.ca. Once registered, staff or a volunteer will give you a physical client card.
  3. If you're an existing client, wait in line and give your Client ID Number at the check-in desk.
  4. After checking in, you’ll receive a laminated number card (with household members) and/or dietary cards.
  5. Take a box or use a CICS food trolley, then wait in line.
  6. Food station volunteers will call you when it is your turn. Show your number and dietary cards to collect food.
  7. Collect food from each station.
  8. Return all number and dietary cards at the last station.
  9. A bonus table may be available sometimes.
  10. Pack your food and return the trolley.
